COVID-19 Mother's Day
This is your public service announcement - MOTHER’S DAY IS MAY 10th -
I know, I know you think every year is the most important Mother’s Day but this is not a drill…we are at DEFCON 1 level…this is the most important Mother’s Day we may (hopefully) ever see. Mom’s across the world are dealing with A LOT right now (Dad’s I know you are also but hush we will get to you in June). Mom is house manager, full-time employee/business owner, she is teacher, housekeeper, full time chef, co-worker, administrative assistant, IT department, etc. Basically the mom’s of the world are holding this sh*t together right now and they need some recognition! I know we are all on a super tight budget right now and there is a lot of uncertainty but please let me know if I can help you to make this Mother’s Day extra sparkly. I have plenty of special pieces at all price points and I would love to help you be a hero this year.
I am available for consultations via e-mail, text, video chat and can make deliveries in the DFW Metroplex or ship to you!

Concierge-style jeweler, wholesale jeweler, bench jeweler…what do these descriptive phrases mean how do they apply to me you ask? Let me elaborate on my process at Nicole Compton Jewelry. I describe myself as a concierge-style jeweler because I do not own a traditional brick and mortar jewelry store. I do not have showcases filled with inventory for you to peruse when you visit with me. I treat every client as a custom jewelry project. How is that different from a wholesale jeweler? Do I actually manufacture the jewelry? Let me answer those questions and more.

Garnet has been used as far back as the Bronze Age, 3500 B.C.E., and by the Egyptians in jewelry. It’s name is a Latin derivative that translates to seed and is thought to represent the pomegranate seed. Garnet was worn as a symbol of life, a talisman for protection to warriors and to ward off plague, for its healing properties, safety during travel. Garnet eliminates negative thoughts and wards off depression, instills confidence in it’s wearer and creates clarity to induce creative thinking. What I am getting at is the Garnet has been lauded through the millennia and is a pretty important gemstone to kick off each new year.

Oh 2019, you were quite the year…something special to be sure! I started looking back on all the year in review type articles online and on TV. I thought about all the politics, angst, progress, and one thing I want to focus on “sparking joy.” Yep, I did it too…I Marie Kondo-ed my life sparking joy in every room of my house then not quite keeping up with it as I look around today! I looked around my house thinking about all the “stuff” and all the money I had spent on said stuff, ugh. However, there is one place in which I absolutely refuse to buy “stuff” and it’s my jewelry collection.
Don’t get me wrong I love fashion jewelry and I love “more is more” style jewelry but having the experience and background that I have I really struggle with the fake jewelry consumer. I mean this stuff is NOT cheap and eventually it is thrown away and there it sits in our landfills. I’m not going to get all political about climate change, our industrial waste complex and consumerism but real jewelry is an interesting product in which we can recycle and truly reuse every part of it…but I digress. What I really wanted to talk about is the phenomenon of a capsule collection that has spread through the internets holding hands with Marie Kondo and sparking joy throughout the digital landscape.
A capsule collection is a condensed wardrobe filled with quality, classic garments that can be worn together in many different combinations transcending seasons throughout the year. This is done without having excessive clothing items. Why aren’t we doing this with our jewelry? There are essential jewelry items that transcend trends and are wearable over generations. Not only that but when you purchase a few quality jewelry pieces instead of an overflowing jewelry box filled with costume jewelry you have made an investment that will not wear out, get holes, etc. If I were building a classic capsule collection here is what I would include:
Diamond Stud Earrings - The first piece of jewelry that I think every woman needs is a pair of diamond stud earrings. Diamond studs can be worn everyday with any outfit and in any situation. They are the staple of a jewelry capsule collection.
A Great Gold Bracelet - I love a gold bracelet. I know there are those who swear by the Cartier LOVE bracelet and while I do love the way it looks, I don’t believe it is a great investment of those dollars. I love this classic Italian-designed rolling bracelet in yellow gold. For the same amount of money you spend on a LOVE bracelet you could have this timeless statement bracelet.
A Timeless Watch - See what I did there?!? So watches are pricey…this is an item that you save up to purchase. There is no need to spend hundreds of dollars on fashion watches when you are just going to look at your phone for the time. Wait, save your pennies and buy a watch that will last forever. The pre-owned watch market is ideal for the first time watch buyer. There are so many well priced pre-owned watches out there and with a new strap and quick polish they look BRAND NEW. For me…it’s a classic dress watch by Breguet. I love it the history of the brand, I love the esthetic, I love this watch!
A Great Necklace - For me…pearls of course. I like a twist on classic pearls and love a strand of Baroque pearls to freshen up any look. Pearls feel old but Baroque pearls feel eclectic to me and I love to add them to the old t-shirt and jeans to make the look extra.
The best thing about jewelry…it’s completely subjective. I will continue the capsule collection with different style profiles in mind. Please let me know if I can help you start your jewelry capsule collection and let’s spark joy in 2020 people!
Emeralds: May Birthstone
Happy birthday May babies, your birthstone is the mighty Emerald. It belongs to the mineral family Beryl which also includes Aquamarine and Morgnaite. Emeralds have been used in almost every civilization as religious or protective symbols. Emeralds were first found in Brazil but today we recognize the emeralds from Colombia as the finest. What characteristics should you look for in emeralds? Emerald crystals tend to have many inclusions, cracks and fissures so a clean crystal is very rare and desirable. A deep, vibrant green is the most desirable color for emeralds and usually the most expensive. Emeralds have been commonly enhanced over the centuries because of the surface fissures that are associated with the crystal. Clear oils are applied to the emerald to fill those fissures and give the gemstone more life. Green tinted oils can also be applied to the gem but is not considered an acceptable practice as the oils will dry over time and the true hue of the gem will surface. Very fine emeralds are graded and certified by gemological laboratories which can tell if enhancements have beed used. Emeralds should never be put in cleaning solutions, ultrasonic cleaners, or steam cleaners as this force can cause the gem to chip or crack. A fine emerald should be worn for special occasions and not everyday.

February Birthstone - Amethyst
February is the month in which we celebrate love and the rich heritage of the African-American community. We also celebrate the birthdays of those born this month with the birthstone Amethyst. Amethyst belongs to the Quartz family but is the most rare of all Quartz minerals. With deep purple hues, Amethyst is a stunning gemstone with a rich history.
In Ancient Greece, Amethyst was associated with the God Bacchus (the God of Wine) and was believed to prevent intoxication to those wearing it. Amethyst in Ancient Greek means “not drunk.” Today, the power of Amethyst is thought to bring a clear head and quick wit.
Amethyst has been used in Jewelry for thousands of years starting with the Egyptians and was considered one of the most precious gemstones until large deposits were found in the 1800’s and it was downgraded to a semi-precious gemstone. Mined in Brazil, Zambia and all over North America, but the most rare is Siberian Amethyst whose mine in Russia has been exhausted. The hue and clarity of the Amethyst can give clues about where it was mined with Brazilian gems having less inclusions and African gems having a deeper hue.
Purple, being the color of royalty, is commonly used for royal accessories and we do see a lot of Amethyst in crown jewels but it is an affordable gemstone which makes it accessible to the masses as well. Amethyst is an inclusive gemstone.
Diamonds 101 - Cut and Color
The way a diamond is cut and its color are the two most important qualities of a diamond. Do not be confused though; the cut and the shape are two different things. The cut is how the diamond is cut and faceted from the rough diamond into the finished diamond we are used to seeing. The color of the diamond refers to how much color is seen within the diamond.

I love pearls and not just because it is my birthstone! I love their shape, I love their colors and I love the feel of pearls. Pearls are a staple of any great jewelry wardrobe and I think they are underestimated by the majority of us. When we think of pearls an image of statuesque woman in her living room wearing a fabulous 1950’s day dress, heels, an apron, and a strand of pearls comes to mind. Her hair is perfectly coiffed as she elegantly vacuums the floor. At least that’s what I imagine. But pearls can be so much more edgy and modern than that. You’ve heard of leather and lace…why not leather and pearls.
