Oh 2019, you were quite the year…something special to be sure! I started looking back on all the year in review type articles online and on TV. I thought about all the politics, angst, progress, and one thing I want to focus on “sparking joy.” Yep, I did it too…I Marie Kondo-ed my life sparking joy in every room of my house then not quite keeping up with it as I look around today! I looked around my house thinking about all the “stuff” and all the money I had spent on said stuff, ugh. However, there is one place in which I absolutely refuse to buy “stuff” and it’s my jewelry collection.
Don’t get me wrong I love fashion jewelry and I love “more is more” style jewelry but having the experience and background that I have I really struggle with the fake jewelry consumer. I mean this stuff is NOT cheap and eventually it is thrown away and there it sits in our landfills. I’m not going to get all political about climate change, our industrial waste complex and consumerism but real jewelry is an interesting product in which we can recycle and truly reuse every part of it…but I digress. What I really wanted to talk about is the phenomenon of a capsule collection that has spread through the internets holding hands with Marie Kondo and sparking joy throughout the digital landscape.
A capsule collection is a condensed wardrobe filled with quality, classic garments that can be worn together in many different combinations transcending seasons throughout the year. This is done without having excessive clothing items. Why aren’t we doing this with our jewelry? There are essential jewelry items that transcend trends and are wearable over generations. Not only that but when you purchase a few quality jewelry pieces instead of an overflowing jewelry box filled with costume jewelry you have made an investment that will not wear out, get holes, etc. If I were building a classic capsule collection here is what I would include:
Diamond Stud Earrings - The first piece of jewelry that I think every woman needs is a pair of diamond stud earrings. Diamond studs can be worn everyday with any outfit and in any situation. They are the staple of a jewelry capsule collection.
A Great Gold Bracelet - I love a gold bracelet. I know there are those who swear by the Cartier LOVE bracelet and while I do love the way it looks, I don’t believe it is a great investment of those dollars. I love this classic Italian-designed rolling bracelet in yellow gold. For the same amount of money you spend on a LOVE bracelet you could have this timeless statement bracelet.
A Timeless Watch - See what I did there?!? So watches are pricey…this is an item that you save up to purchase. There is no need to spend hundreds of dollars on fashion watches when you are just going to look at your phone for the time. Wait, save your pennies and buy a watch that will last forever. The pre-owned watch market is ideal for the first time watch buyer. There are so many well priced pre-owned watches out there and with a new strap and quick polish they look BRAND NEW. For me…it’s a classic dress watch by Breguet. I love it the history of the brand, I love the esthetic, I love this watch!
A Great Necklace - For me…pearls of course. I like a twist on classic pearls and love a strand of Baroque pearls to freshen up any look. Pearls feel old but Baroque pearls feel eclectic to me and I love to add them to the old t-shirt and jeans to make the look extra.
The best thing about jewelry…it’s completely subjective. I will continue the capsule collection with different style profiles in mind. Please let me know if I can help you start your jewelry capsule collection and let’s spark joy in 2020 people!
